Day 7: A Gentleman and a Scholar - The Duty of Life

Today, we will read from the text, Play the Man.

The focus on on theology - the study of the nature of God and religious beliefs. While the goal is not to promote religion, you will examine the words of an author who discuss several tenets of manhood through religious and reading examples. For example, he pulls the following quote from 1 Corinthians 13:11

When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

While reading the book, I was impressed by a description of Teddy Roosevelt. The author writes, "he played offense with his life, a hurry-up offense. It was like a two-minute drill every minute of every hour of every day." Roosevelt wasn't one to sit back and let life happen to him.

The author also provides a compilation of quotes for two mediation stones on Roosevelt Island in Washington D.C.

Youth

I want to see you game boys, I want to see
you brave and manly and I also want to
see you gentle and tender. Be practical
as well as generous in your ideas. Keep
your eyes on the stars but remember
to keep your feet on the ground.
courageous hard work, self-mastery,
and intelligent effort are all essential
to be successful in life. Alike for the
nation and the individual,
the one indispensable requisite is character.

MANHOOD

A MAN'S USEFULNESS DEPENDS UPON HIS
LIVING UP THE HIS IDEALS INSOFAR AS HE CAN
IT IS HARD TO FAIL BUT IT IS WORSE
NEVER TO HAVE TRIED TO SUCCEED.
ALL DARING AND COURAGE, AND IRONED
ENDURANCE OF MISFORTUNE MAKE FOR A
FINER AND NOBLER TYPE OF MANHOOD.
ONLY THOSE ARE FIT TO LIVE WHO DO
NOT FEAR TO DIE, AND NONE ARE FIT
TO DIE WHO HAVE SHRUNKEN FOR THE
JOY OF LIFE AND THE DUTY OF LIFE.
